Which degree do I qualify for and what is the difference between the LL.M. and MST degree?
If you have a bachelor's degree in accounting or business related field, you would qualify for the MST (Master of Science in Taxation) degree. If you have your J.D., you would qualify for the LL.M. (Master of Laws in Taxation) degree. The program is the same but the degree designation is different depending upon what your under graduate education qualifies you for. Some students have a bachelor's degree in a related field as well as their J.D. If this is the case, you would qualify for either but would obviously want to pursue the degree that fits your current or future goals. Please see pages 2 & 3 of the Tax Bulletin for more information regarding Admission Requirements.
When can I start?
The school has open-enrollment, therefore you can apply at any time. Once you have been accepted, you can start immediately. You are on a trimester schedule. The program is at your own pace. You have five years to complete the program.
How long does it take to complete the program?
You have a minimum time of ten months and a maximum time of five years to complete the program. The average completion time is approximately two years. However, because this program is at your own pace, it's completely up to you.
How does the program work?
Once you have been accepted into the program, you are ready to begin your first trimester. You will be sent the first three core courses at once. Most Courses have a syllabus and handouts that are available to download through the student section of the website. As you are viewing the course lectures, you will be required to take notes and complete an examination requirement. Each time you complete a course and course examination, you will receive a certificate of completion. Once you have completed the 24 semester units required to graduate, you can either request to take the Final Comprehensive Exam that will need to be proctored or you can check out more courses and continue your studies.
How do I enroll and get started?
You can download an enrollment agreement on our website. You will need to fill it out, sign it and send in your $50 application fee. Our admissions office will review your application to verify that you meet admission requirements (please see "Admission Requirements" on pages 11 & 12 in the Taxation Bulletin, which can be accessed from the home page of the website). Once you have been accepted into the program, you will receive a letter of acceptance along with other information you will need to get started.
What courses do I have to take?
There are several core, foundational courses which must be completed at the beginning of the program, see pages 7,8 & 9 in the Taxation Bulletin. These core courses will be sent to you first (601 – 605). After the core courses, all remaining courses are electives, so you may take whatever courses you need to complete the 24 hour requirement. Students come with varying educational backgrounds and work experience. After the core courses, we recommend that you take the courses that pertain to your current profession, future interests and goals.
What does the tuition cover?
The tuition covers all of the courses the school offers until graduation. Students that wish to continue their studies beyond graduation may take additional courses at ˝ the current tuition rate – as a lifetime benefit for graduating. Text books are purchased separately.
How do I order courses?
After completing the core courses, a student may go to the "student section" of the website after receiving their user name and password. Then click on "Courses Offered," where you can view and select the course you would like to take. To order the course on-line, click on the "Course Request" link at the bottom of each course description.
How long does it take to get a course?
We send courses UPS Ground, so, shipping time varies between 3-5 business days. On average, shipping time is 3-5 business days anywhere in the Continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico.
Sometime in early 2009, students will be able to download their entire courses directly from the website. We’ll send out a “Student Announcement” when that time arrives.
What text do I use?
The suggested text and order information is listed on the "Courses Offered" web page. We highly recommend using the text that the instructors are using as it is easier to follow along. Every student should also have an up-to-date copy of the Internal Revenue Code.
Why do trimester units and CPE credit not correlate?
CPE credit and trimester unit credit are calculated using different criteria. CPE is given based on an "average" completion time of a course, and trimester units are given based on "specific" hours given for each session of a course, see page 13 in the Taxation Bulletin.
